Use the question to focus attention

Identify what kind of information will answer the question: purpose, place, relationship, opinion, reason or detail. This creates a listening target and reduces the urge to chase every unknown word.

Listen for reformulation. The correct option often expresses the same meaning with different words, while distractors repeat a word from the audio but change the message.

Notice structure and speaker attitude

  • Opening context: who is speaking and where?
  • Contrast markers: mais, pourtant, en revanche.
  • Cause and consequence: parce que, donc, c’est pourquoi.
  • Opinion and uncertainty: je pense, il semble, peut-être.
  • Corrections: finalement, plutôt, en fait.

Do not stop at an unknown word

Use surrounding meaning, tone and the options. One unfamiliar word rarely prevents you from identifying the speaker’s goal. If uncertain, eliminate options contradicted by clear evidence and make the best supported choice.

Practise actively

After answering, replay practice audio when available and locate the exact signal. Write a short summary from memory, then compare it with the transcript. Shadow one or two sentences to improve segmentation and sound recognition.

Mix focused drills with uninterrupted timed sets so your concentration develops alongside comprehension.

Review distractors, not only correct answers

For each error, explain why your choice was attractive and what made it wrong. This turns a mistake into a reusable warning about negation, speaker changes, time references or partial information.
