Read the task in the right sequence

First identify what the question asks. Then scan the passage for the relevant area, read that part carefully and compare all four options. This is more efficient than translating the whole passage before you know what evidence matters.

For main-idea questions, consider the full text. For detail questions, require a precise supporting sentence.

Recognize common distractors

  • An option repeats words from the passage but changes the relationship.
  • An option is generally true but not stated in the text.
  • An option describes one detail but not the author’s main purpose.
  • An option exaggerates with words such as always or never.
  • An option reverses cause and effect.

Infer vocabulary from context

Look at the sentence’s function, nearby examples and grammatical form. Decide whether the missing meaning is positive, negative, an action or a description. Confirm the inference against the whole sentence before selecting an answer.

Protect time for later texts

Early items are not a reason to rush carelessly, but one difficult question should not consume time needed elsewhere. Make the best evidence-based choice, note the uncertainty and continue according to the test interface.

Build evidence-based review habits

After each set, highlight the exact words that support the correct answer and identify why each distractor fails. Keep a vocabulary list organized by context rather than isolated translation.
