TCF Canada Writing Test: Format, Examples and Preparation Tips

The TCF Canada writing test contains three tasks completed in 60 minutes. Strong responses satisfy the prompt, suit the audience and organize ideas clearly. Accuracy matters, but a grammatically polished text that misses the task cannot perform well.

What the three writing tasks require

The tasks increase in complexity. You may need to communicate practical information, present an account or comparison, and develop a supported position. Always follow the exact instructions and word range shown in the official task.

Realistic prompt examples

  • Write to a friend describing a new neighbourhood and invite them to visit.
  • Contact an organization to explain a situation and request specific information.
  • Respond to two viewpoints about remote work and present your own supported position.

Plan before you write

Underline the audience, purpose and required content. Create a short outline with one function per paragraph. Decide on the appropriate register before drafting the opening.

Reserve time to verify that every required point appears. Then check agreements, verb forms, connectors, spelling and punctuation.

StageQuestion to ask

PlanWhat must each paragraph accomplish?
DraftAre ideas connected and specific?
ReviewDid I answer every part of the prompt?

Make examples do real work

Avoid generic claims such as “technology is good.” Explain who benefits, under what conditions and why. A short concrete example demonstrates control better than repeated abstract statements.

Use connectors according to meaning—not simply to sound advanced. Contrast, cause, consequence and illustration should be logically accurate.

Common mistakes

  • Ignoring one instruction or required content point.
  • Using an inappropriate formal or informal register.
  • Writing a long introduction and leaving the final point undeveloped.
  • Repeating the prompt instead of adding information.
  • Editing every sentence while drafting and running out of time.

Practise with revision

Save each response, review feedback and rewrite one paragraph using clearer organization or more precise language. Track repeated errors so the next task has one concrete improvement goal.
